In this experiment, I made a 3D model of an Ottoman miniature representing the city of Constantinople. This virtual three-dimensional miniature allows us to go through the golden frame and the pictorial surface of pigments, and finally dive into the city from different angles. We can walk through its alleys, fly around its domes and explore the hidden corners of Constantinople as imagined by the miniaturist.
The original miniature represented the urban space of Constantinople as a magical condensation of invisible and eclectic myths, far beyond its material appearance. The "Constantinopolitan Eye" saw in the metallic and mineral architecture of the city a supernatural origine, a divine reason of existence and an apocalyptic destiny. Underlying the colorful and dream-like representations of miniatures, the Ottoman understanding of space is fundemantally different than our modern, western-born, mathematical and materialistic definition.
The 3D miniature is the result of an attemp to bring this vision into contemporary architecture to subvert the rationalism of the machine and imagine a certain digital mysticism in the Age of AI. It connects and confronts history of arts and technological experimentation, scientific research and artistic creation, the cultural spheres of the East and the West, and most explicitly our medieval past and technological future.
Containing the elixir of immortality, it shows to whoever looks in it
the destiny of all there is in the universe.
Alexander the Great and Suleyman the Magnificent have drunken from it.
